Data fields from the GGA and RMC sentences allow several attributes of the flight and atmosphere to be determined.


Winds aloft are determined from the speed and heading fields of the RMC sentence. The current altitude is taken from the altitude field of the GGA sentence. You can see that the stack passed through the jetstream at about 42,000 feet. At that altitude, wind speeds maxed out at 85 knots.



Climb rate of the stack is determined by the time and altitude fields of the GGA sentence. The graph shows the climb rate was greater for the first 30 minutes of the flight. This is typical, but the reason for greater climb rates early in the flight is unknown. 

Environmental Sounder


A temperature and pressure sensor are sent on each flight. The graphs below show the air temperature and pressure as a function of altitude. The altitude data is determined by the on-board GPS receiver.

Air Pressure


The air pressure drops almost logarithmically with altitude.

Air Temperature



The lowest air temperature experienced during a near space flight occurs when the nearcraft passes through the tropopause. The graph shows the boundary between troposphere and stratosphere occurs at 50,000 feet where the ambient temperature drops to -70 degrees Fahrenheit.
